Eligible individuals may register and vote during the one-stop early voting period.  This “same-day registration” process is currently permitted due to a preliminary injunction granted under a decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, but this option remains the subject of ongoing litigation in federal court.  Please check back at this website for updates.  Click here to check your voter registration status.

1. Sign and complete a voter registration form, attesting that you meet each eligibility requirement under law. Such attestation is signed under penalty of a Class I felony.

2. Provide proof of residence by presenting: a North Carolina drivers license; a photo identification from a government agency; or a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other government document.

The following are the hours voters may use our One Stop Absentee Option for the November 3rd, 2015 Municipal Election. One Stop will only be conducted at the Board of Elections Office. Satellite sites will not operate for the 2015 Municipal Elections.

NOTICE TO ONE-STOP SAME DAY REGISTRANTS

An individual who is qualified to register to vote may register in person and then vote at a one-stop absentee voting site in the person’s county of residence during the period of one-stop absentee voting. To register and vote under this statutory provision, you must:

In the event you do not have an acceptable proof of residence currently in your possession, you may vote a provisional ballot, but your voter registration application will not be processed during the one-stop period unless you submit acceptable proof of residence to you county board of elections on or before the close of business on the day prior to the county canvass:

Voting with Retrievable Ballot

After registration, you may vote a retrievable absentee ballot immediately after registering. If you decline to vote immediately, your registration will be processed and you may later vote at a one-stop absentee voting site in this county in the same election. However, you will not be able to use same-day registration today and then vote on Election Day for this election.

Verification of Registration

Within two business days of your same-day registration, the county board of elections shall verify your NC drivers license or Social Security number, update the statewide registration database, search for possible duplicate registrations, and proceed to verify your address by mail. Your vote shall be counted unless the county board determines that you are not qualified to vote in accordance with North Carolina law.

To verify your address, a voter registration card will be mailed to you. In the event the county board of elections cannot verify your address by mail (your voter registration card is returned undeliverable), your voter registration and one-stop absentee ballot may be subject to challenge. In the event of a challenge, you will receive notice and instructions. Challenged voters must be prepared to present documentation that verifies your name and address.
